
Day 1 – Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a valuable tool when dealing with behaviours of concern and is the primary route to ensuring restraint reduction.
PBS training gives staff skills to:
- Free people from harmful and behaviours of distress
- Change the way such behaviours are viewed by others
- Develop skills and knowledge to improve the way your service users live their lives
Delegates will learn how to develop positive proactive strategies to support their service users and prevent behaviours of distress before they occur.
They will learn about and understand the PBS Competency Framework, assessments, evaluations and planning, on both a proactive and reactive basis.
Day 1 information:
- 6 hours of training
- Maximum of 18 delegates per trainer (although we recommend 12 as a group size)
Day 2 – Managing Behaviours of Distress and Breakaway Skills
Staff will learn about behaviours of distress and some effective strategies to avoid them.
They will be taught to:
- Recognise triggers and cues prior to behaviour escalating
- Understand what happens to the human body when faced with fear and conflict
- How best to communicate with service users to reduce the likelihood of conflict through de-escalation skills
Delegates will be taught simple and effective breakaway techniques for both low and high risk situations when managing behaviours of concern and the laws that govern them.
All teaching is conducted with a constant emphasis on restraint reduction and preventative strategies.
Day 2 information:
- 8-10 hours of training depending on group size
- Maximum of 18 delegates per trainer (although we recommend 12 as a group size)
Day 3 – Restrictive Physical Intervention Training
Delegates will learn ‘control & restraint’ and physical intervention PMVA skills.
Typical course content includes:
- The use of force
- Health and Safety and Human Rights legislation
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
- Avoiding and detection of positional asphyxia
- Instruction and practice of low/high risk physical intervention techniques (subject to TNA supporting this)
All teaching is conducted with a constant emphasis on restraint reduction and preventative strategies.
Day 3 information:
- 8-10 hours of training depending on group size
- Maximum of 12 delegates per trainer
- Additional trainers can be provided if required
Day 4 – Handcuff and Soft Restraint Training
Delegates will learn safe and effective use of restraint equipment, including handcuffs and soft-cuffs.
The course content covers:
- Understanding the law regarding the use of force
- Powers of arrest
- The Human Rights Act
- Manual Handling Regulations
- Health and Safety at Work Act and regulations
- Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act
- The medical implications of using handcuffs and soft restraints
- Avoiding and detecting positional asphyxia
- How to apply handcuffs and soft-cuffs to a passive subject
- How to apply handcuffs and soft-cuffs to an aggressive subject
- How to remove handcuffs and soft-cuffs safely
Day 4 information:
- 8-10 hours of training depending on group size
- Maximum of 12 delegates per trainer
- Additional trainers can be provided if required
A frequent requirement in the NHS tender process is for ligature removal and searching people training. These modules can be included within the course above, as a fifth day, consisting of a half-day training session for ligature removal and a half-day session for searching people.
