Physical Intervention & PMVA Course (Bild ACT & RRN Certified)

Day 1 – Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Training

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is the most valuable tool when dealing with behaviours of distress and is the primary route to ensuring restraint reduction.

PBS training gives staff skills to:

  • Help people move safely away from challenging behaviours and behaviours of distress
  • Change the way such behaviours are viewed by others
  • Develop skills and knowledge to improve the way your service users live their lives

Delegates will learn how to develop proactive strategies to support their service users and prevent behaviours of distress before they occur. They will learn about identifying triggers and implementing effective preventative approaches, conducting assessments, evaluations and planning, on both a proactive and reactive basis.

By the end of the training, delegates will be equipped to reduce risk, promote positive behaviours, and enhance wellbeing for the people they support.

Day 1 information:

  • 7 hours of training
  • Delivered in-house
  • Maximum of 18 delegates per trainer
  • Suitable for all settings

Day 2 – Managing Behaviours of Distress and Breakaway Training

Staff will learn to identify behaviours of distress and understand effective strategies to prevent or manage them.

Staff will be taught to:

  • Recognise triggers and early cues that indicate behaviour may escalate
  • Understand physiological responses that occur in the human body during fear or conflict
  • Apply effective communication and de-escalation techniques to reduce the likelihood of conflict with service users

Delegates will be taught simple and effective breakaway techniques for both low and high-risk situations when managing behaviours of distress, alongside the laws and regulations that govern such interventions.

All training is delivered with a strong emphasis on restraint reduction and the use of preventative strategies.

Day 2 information:

  • 8 hours of training
  • Delivered in-house
  • Maximum of 18 delegates per trainer

Day 3 – Restrictive Physical Intervention Training

Delegates will learn risk-assessed physical intervention skills, tailored to their role and needs. Only techniques identified as necessary through a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) will be taught, ensuring training is relevant, safe, and appropriate.

Typical course content:

  • The use of force: Law, principles and appropriate application
  • Relevant Health and Safety and Human Rights legislation
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
  • Recognition, avoidance, and detection of positional asphyxia
  • Instruction and supervised practice of low-risk physical intervention techniques

All teaching is conducted with a constant emphasis on restraint reduction and the use of preventative strategies.

Day 3 information:

  • 8 hours of training
  • Delivered in-house
  • Maximum of 12 delegates per trainer. A second trainer will be provided for day 3 when required.
