1 Day PMVA, Physical Intervention Course
Delivered at your venue at times to suit you, this is a 1 day course (7 hours).
It teaches the law, low-level ‘control and restraint’ and physical intervention skills in the Prevention & Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA).
The content can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Typical course content includes:
- The use of force
- The Health and Safety at Work Act
- The Human Rights Act
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
- Clarification of techniques that should not be used following NHS guidance,
- Avoiding and detection of positional asphyxia
- NHS Positive and Proactive Care – Reducing the need for restrictive interventions (where applicable)
- Conflict management techniques
- Instruction and practice of breakaway and self-defence techniques (where applicable)
- Instruction and practice of low risk physical intervention techniques
All successful candidates will be awarded a certificate. Refresher training should be completed annually.

1 Day Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) PLUS 1 Day PMVA, Physical Intervention Course
Delivered at your venue at times to suit you, this is a 2 day course (2 x 7 hours).
Day 1: Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
PBS is a proactive, evidence-based approach to promoting positive behaviour. It focuses on understanding the underlying causes of behaviour, teaching appropriate social and emotional skills, and creating supportive learning environments. PBS emphasises prevention, consistent routines, and positive reinforcement, helping people thrive academically, socially, and emotionally while supporting staff to manage behaviour safely and effectively.
- What Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is
- Identifying types of behaviour, recognising triggers and cues that lead to behaviours of distress, prior to behaviour escalating
- Creating supportive, personalised care and environments for both service users and your staff
- The importance of consistency in practice. Promotes supportive environments by using consistent routines and positive reinforcement
- Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of current processes
- Building therapeutic relationships and understanding their value
- Recognising emotional triggers in yourself and others to improve support
- Proactive and preventative strategies to maximise positive outcomes, enabling safe and effective behaviour management
Day 2: 1 Day PMVA, Physical Intervention Course
- Includes all content from our 1 Day PMVA, Physical Intervention Course.
All training is delivered with the clear purpose of reducing the need for restrictive physical interventions.
All delegates successfully completing the course will receive a certificate. Physical Intervention skills refresher training should be completed annually.

2 Day Advanced PMVA, Physical Intervention Course
Delivered at your venue, this is a 2 day course (14 hours).
This course includes advanced-level ‘control and restraint’ skills, conflict management and breakaway techniques.
Often delivered by other trainers as a 3 day course, we deliver the content in 2 days, saving you time and money.
The content can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Typical course content includes:
- The use of force
- The Health and Safety at Work Act
- The Human Rights Act
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
- Clarification of techniques that should not be used following NHS guidance
- Avoiding and detecting positional asphyxia
- NHS Positive and Proactive Care – Reducing the need for restrictive interventions (where applicable)
- Conflict management and de-escalation techniques
- Instruction and practice of breakaway and self-defence techniques (where applicable)
- Instruction and practice of low risk physical intervention techniques
- Instruction and practice of higher risk (advanced) restrictive physical intervention techniques
